Zombi Music ZOMBI CD4 08/2001

Steve TallisThis month I'm going to focus on one of the most ambitious CD box sets ever undertaken by an Australian musician, Steve Tallis' 8 CD box set, The Sacred Path of the Fried Egg - Anthology Volume One. Initially I would have got a chuckle out of Tallis' humour in describing it as volume 1, but after checking out the goods, I sincerely believe he will produce a 2nd box set before the end of his lifetime! Box sets in Australia are a rare item. Few bands have had the longevity or extent of work to be afforded a box set of re-issues, either for the collector market or for the consummate fan who must collect everything a band issues. So for company Tallis has AC/DC, Skyhooks, The Angels, INXS, Split Enz, Johnny OšKeefe and The Birthday Party - all household names. Tallis is not in the same league as those bands but given the preparation, thought and dedication that Tallis has put into this project - without the aid of supportive record company - he deserves to be.

I've been familiar with Tallis' work over a couple of decades, so to me the main interest is the first two CDs of early recordings, which include tapes of live gigs - Steve taped almost every gig - which have not been released for general release or issued in such small numbers they never were sighted on the east coast. Thus these early recordings are eminently collectible. In terms of music, Tallis' music has been drenched in blues and blues-rock related genres. His early bands were traditional blues bands but as he grew older, Steve has incorporated blues into his own recordings and compositions to such an extent his music, while still having a blues base, has extended into different directions, without losing sight of his early influences. Today his music is less easily describable, with Tallis using unusual rhythms and instruments to become more well known among world music enthusiasts, rather than just blues' fans.

I had the opportunity to interview Steve about the process of putting the project together.

CS: Why did you decide to do the box set?
ST: Because I believe in documenting my own history as part of the wider picture - Western Australian / Australian / Music in general. I sincerely believe it is important in a historical sense to do this. It is a good thing to have for my children also. Also I believe in taking risks and challenging the normal behaviour of the music industry.
CS: What sort of difficulties did you encounter during the process?
ST: I had troubles deciding what tracks to choose? What versions to use? The packaging - I went through an exhaustive process to finally end up with the final choice. I checked out every box set I could for ideas. In the end I am very happy with the package - simple but effective. If I had more money I could've gone way over the top - eg. the booklet could've been 100 pages etc. My family was involved in every facet of the box set - my son did all the computer / layout work etc. I also wanted it to be very personal in the feel. I am sure no record company would've approved of how / why I did it.
CS: What reaction did you get from friends and band musicians?
ST: Everybody that knows me knows that I have been serious about putting it out for a long time. It was originally coming out about 10 years ago on vinyl but the pressing plant that was going to press the vinyl went broke - a nightmare. Every musician that has worked with me respects me as can be seen by the notes in the booklet. This was important for me to get their perspective of working with me over a very long period - very satisfying. I practice what I preach in relation to the 100% freedom that I allow the musicians that play / create music with me.
CS: How long did the project take to complete?
ST: A few years. I listened to thousands of tapes of gigs, rehearsals etc. I never got through the whole collection. I taped every performance, rehearsal, session, radio interview, all my work tapes writing new songs - everything for 25 - 30 years. I could still be listening now!
CS: What response have you had so far?
ST: Media - generally negative. They can't really get their head around what I have done. The fact that I am so fiercely independent bothers / confuses the media - no record company, no manager, no PR person, total belief in what I am doing, etc. I am a very intense person - I never give up! My philosophy is the same as always - if I get through to one person let alone more is enough satisfaction for me. I have nothing to prove to anyone in the industry or anywhere/ anyone else. I am not a musician for my own ego. venues / promoters - same Public - I have a large, supportive, genuinely appreciative mailing list - this is my main focus. Obviously I would like to increase the number of people that listen to my music / see me perform. I intend to be playing music until I die - releasing albums etc along the way.

The 8 CD set is housed in two double jewel cases holding 4 cds each, encased in a heavy card box. Accompanying the set are extensive notes in a 48 page booklet which includes colour photographs. The liner notes were compiled by Steve and many musicians were asked to make a few comments about working and playing with Tallis in many of the bands he has formed since 1962. These provide a fascinating insight in the world of Steve Tallis and give the reader a wonderful sense of the project. With my interest in family history, it's inspiring to see such a detailed account documented for future research - therešs photos of various incarnations of Tallis' bands during the past four decades.

Thus for the collector this project is an obvious item to be collected, given the nature of the product and the unusualness of the presentation. Be quick for there are only 100 manufactured!
