FEATURE ALBUM - 23/8/07

CITY LIGHTS - El Sol

Sydney group The City Lights have released their second album, 'El Sol', where, even more than the first time, they sound like several groups rolled into one, a pop band with trumpet solo on one track, dirty and gritty like the Saints on another. And it's no wonder really, because the band members DO come from several other bands, as a sideline the first time, fitting in the sessions whenever various schedules allowed, but this time, with a radically changed line-up, focused as a result of a concentrated time together following tour dates in Spain. Leading the group is James Roden whose last band the John Reed Club were considered contenders but somehow never made it big. His big brother Harry has taken over main bass duties in the City Lights. Harry's also responsible for a couple of cheesy TV-theme like instrumentals on 'El Sol', part of the diversity and entertainment. There's a sixties influence throughout, the pop side of the Who and the Kinks, the way they might be performed by a band with punkish leanings.
