Invertigo
Melbourne's
Leigh brothers James and Vince joined Pseudo Echo in the middle
of that group's career, when the dye was already cast and that group's
musical direction was entrenched, firmly in singer Brian Canham's
grasp. James was first to join, on keyboards, in time to work on
the group's second album 'Love's An Adventure'. Brother Vince was
on drums by the time the album was released. Still in their teens
they joined just in time to tour and record in America.
After Pseudo
Echo the Leigh brothers took time out for a few years, before starting
to write songs again, playing in cover bands, and with their older
brother Gerome forming the group that was initially Vertigo. They
scored an immediate hit with their first single 'Forever Lately'
(July 97) but started falling
out with their singer around the time of releasing the follow-up.
Losing their singer also meant losing their record contract with
Gotham.
Difficult as
all that was, the group felt they had too much going for them to
just throw it all in, and advertised for a new singer. Christian
Argenti, who also comes from a musical family, had done everything
there was to do as an upcoming singer in Queensland. He'd come to
Melbourne to find new opportunities. For him it was an easy decision.
He saw the ad, applied, talked to the band and wanted in. For the
Leigh brothers and everyone else concerned it was a tough decision,
because it had to be the right one. For four months they kept Christian
waiting, recording demos and considering their options. Christian
forced the issue by asking whether they had any new songs they were
working on, and was handed an unfinished 'Desensitized', which Christian
determined to make his own.
Rather than
start all over again completely, they adjusted their name slightly
and became Invertigo. In February 2003, three years and the 'Forum'
album later, Christian announced he had left the group.
