Kaylan
Kaylan's Dowlut
brothers were born five years and many miles apart, older brother
Dennis born in the UK and Darren in Mauritius. What they share is
their Mauritian family background and a love of American r&b fostered
by years spent travelling the world before the family settled in
Melbourne.
In around 1995,
while their parents returned to Mauritius the brothers stayed in
Australia and became the singing pop duo, Kaylan, taking their name
from a young cousin. In 1996 they were signed to Warner Bros, and
put into the studios with hit-group- turned- production team the
Rockmelons. During the sessions for their first album they were
approached by Baz Luhrmann to perform a dance routine in his latest
film, 'Moulin Rouge'.
As songwriters
they contributed a couple of songs for Warners' other high profile
pop act, Bardot which let to Bardot member Katie Underwood contributing
vocals to the brothers' post-Kaylan recording venture, Disco Montego.
Darren Dowlut
died aged 26, on August 5,2005 after a month-long battle with chest
cancer. He passed away at the Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne.
He was diagnosed on the eve of his relocating, with his brother
Dennis and partner in Disco Montego, to Los Angeles. Having remixed
Mariah Carey's track "Boy", they had been offered remix work with
Carey, Elton John and Blue. Carey was among those who sent flowers
to the family in Australia.
