ALBUM OF THE WEEK - 16/03/2001

Motor Ace - Five Star Laundry

Motor-AceWhat is pop, and what is rock? Motor Ace is a group whose music lives on the edges of both worlds. They've got the instantly appealing songs which beg to be part of corporate rock radio, albeit with a modern edge; and they deliver those songs with a power and energy you can imagine bursting from a stage. There are no compromises on either side of the equation. Motor Ace's long awaited first album is full of potential "singles". On their own the songs shine with style and melody and purpose. Three have already come out as singles and the well is by no means dry. Side by side the songs add up to a "performance", the band ripping away as a unit, with guitars blazing and the rhythm section full of energy. The bridge between the songs and the performance is singer Patrick Robertson, part of the grunge generation with the hint of a punk sneer, full of melody and lyrical intrigue. The cover photo is meant to make you think, what does it mean?'. The songs inside also have you guessing at the meaning. Motor Ace are by no means groundbreaking but they entertain every sense you use to listen to and enjoy music.
