ALBUM OF
THE WEEK - 24/2/2001
Not From
There - Latvian Lovers
Not
From There practice the kind of musical anarchy where nothing is
sacred and everything is possible. It started when an Austrian ran
into a couple of Australians in London. They began making music
together and ended up starting from scratch in Brisbane as Not From
There. After a series of singles and EPs over the last five years
they reach the release of this first album, a diverse collection
of music which evokes the pop groove of Regurgitator or Max Q, the
irreverence of TISM, the rock/dance balance of a New Order, and
the technology generated focus of an Aphex Twin. Reading between
the lines of those disparate comparisons you'll get an idea of the
variety contained on this album. Every song is different. While
the sonic core of most of the music is computer/machine generated,
we know that Not From There are a real group. They want to and do
perform this stuff. That gives everything an energy that you don't
get on pure electronic records. On top of that is a keen sense of
humour which shows itself in varying degrees throughout the album.
The single Frisco Disco could be a novelty, it wasn't also so entertaining.
The album swins from that disco piss-take funk to the ambient 'Lounge
Anthem' while 'Ghost In Texas' has a Jesus And Mary Chain style
slowly smouldering vibe to it. There's a lot to enjoy and absorb
here.
