ALBUM OF THE WEEK - 19/1/2001

Tex Perkins - Dark Horses (Grudge Records/Universal)

Tex Perkins - Dark HorsesIf there is such a thing as a uniquely Australian rock and roll, Nick Cave imagined its persona, and Tex Perkins became it. Tex was just another struggling rocker when he stumbled into the studio in 1983 with the rest of the Beasts Of Bourbon and in an eight hour session recorded the definitive 'The Axeman's Jazz'. There was no time to think, or plan, or be intimidated. They just put together the sum of their parts, who they were, where they had come from, and created an Australian rock landmark, the reference point from which a lot of other music, including Tex Perkins' has flowed. If Bruce Springsteen is American rock and roll, this album is Tex Perkins' 'Nebraska'. Springsteen recorded demos at home, but the demos he carried about with him in the back pocket of his jeans ended up as the album we heard. 'Dark Horses' is like visiting Tex Perkins "by himself", the rock and roll animal sitting quietly in the studio with his musician friends, just expressing himself through his music. In the control room is Tony Cohen, who was there for that Beasts Of Bourbon session and earlier had recorded Nick Cave's Birthday Party. With Tony is guitarist as co-producer Charlie Owen. These three have created a lot of music together and separately. Picking up the hard-to-grasp threads of uniquely Australian rock and roll, a lot of those threads lead their way. February 19 marks the release of "Long Night Of The Dark Horses", a six track bonus edition of Tex Perkins's second solo album "Dark Horses". For those who have already purchased the "Dark Horses" album, the bonus disc will be sold separately for the price of a single ($7.95).
