ALBUM OF THE WEEK - 20/3/2002

George - Polyserena

GeorgeGeorge sound like a huge musical magnet. All the important influences of recent times seem to have stuck to them. Or maybe they're just naturally like all the artists you may care to namecheck listening to George - Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Portishead, Massive Attack, and more. It's always unfair to make comparisons, I'm not. George just come from all those directions at once. They have an internal musical bridge they balance between, the different points brother and sister Katie and Tyrone Nonnan come from. Each takes charge of their own songs, and between them they start off the diversity which George revels in. They've taken some time to get to the point of releasing an album, and that maturity is another of the album's winning points. George might have released an album any number of times over the last few years. If they had it would have been good, but not as good as this. It's like the group has reached a point where they're up to their necks in music and just have to let some of its out in order to move on. Some of this you will already be familiar with. George might not have released an album but there have been singles which have enjoyed a lot of airplay - Special Ones, Bastard Sun, Breathe Now - and most of this music has been well-honed in live performances. George were more than ready to deliver their best at its best. A group like this coming out of England might be far more electronic and sample ridden that George. But underlying the standout melodies and different vocal approaches from Katie and Tyrone are 'real' performances, from a single-minded band that knows exactly where it wants to take each song.
