ALBUM OF
THE WEEK - 7/9/2001
Gerling
- 4
After
three albums of bringing a punks-with guitars-attitude to electronic
music and managing to balance entertainingly between the two, Gerling's
fourth album focuses them more as a rock band, thanks to Los Angeles
sessions with Ethan Johns of Ryan Adams and Kings Of Leon production
fame. It's what they wanted. Before joining Jones in America, the
band prepared themselves with sessions at Sydney's home of rock,
the Annadale Hotel. What has always seen them through their musical
balancing act is their ability write a cheeky, catchy tune, and
that hasn't changed. Songs like 'Auf Wiedersehn' and 'Getaway Car'
are loaded with energetic attack and melody. On 'When The Night
Comes' punk meets Midnight Oil. Elsewhere they're slightly reminiscent
of hey-day Primal Scream. Never the greatest singers they've made
that a virtue rather than a flaw. It's made them urgent and immediate.
