My Friend The
Chocolate Cake - Home Improvements
'Home
Improvements' is My Friend The Chocolate's sixth studio album. Once
an amusement away from David Bridie's main event, Not Drowning Waving,
Chocolate Cake have gradually become the focus, stylistically encompassing
the full gambit of what Bridie has evolved into . If NDW were to
reappear they could be as they were in the very beginning, completely
out there experimental. If David was to contemplate a second solo
album he could take a completely different personal path. Chocolate
Cake is everything in between. In the beginning the concentration
was on the string instruments; cello, violin and mandolin. Those
instruments are still there but not so prominently, sitting alongside
Bridie's characteristic piano and musing vocal style. Lyrically
Chocolate Cake used to be an expression of Australian suburbia.
Elsewhere David satisfied his abiding passion for the indigenous
people immediately north of Australia. Chocolate Cake still live
in the suburbs, but they're traveling too, and 'Home Improvements'
takes both a walk through our own streets and coastal lands, and
included amongst the band's own lush dreamy compositions is a contemporary
New Guinea folk song. Musically David Bridie has always been evocative.
Lyrically he's always been insightful. On this album we go from
the amusing tale of falling in love with a 'Pentecostal Girl' ('I
dream of the day she'll marry me not Garth Porter') and the suburban
blues of 'This Life Tonight' ('the flat smells like the chips are
burning, and the curtains of cigarettes'), to the title track 'Home
Improvements', about dreams of escaping everyday life's relentless
routine.
