Origene
Melbourne's
Origene is the coming together of disparate strands of music into
a combination with all kinds of possibilities in front of it.
Ben Grayson
grew up listening to 'organic' musicians Miles Davis and Herbie
Hancock and played classical and jazz piano. When he was 15 he found
himself with access to a whole MIDI system, and became interested
in production. Those two sides of his interest in music came together
when in the early 90s Ben heard jungle music and transformed himself
into DJ Title, producer of progressive trance. Brian Canham was
the lead singer and main songwriter in 80s "phenomenon" Pseudo Echo,
Australian pioneers of that point in popular music when musicians
started swapping guitars for synthesisers. Since Pseudo Echo broke
up (reunions aside) Brian has made a reputation as a producer. He
continued his contribution to the development of dance/pop with
the shortlived group, Brill.
Canham met
Grayson one night at a nightclub. They discovered a lot of common
group. They also both had home studios. They started writing ambient
music together, and slowly that music started growing into a 'project'.
While that was happening they met singer Matilda White at various
gigs. Matilda made a big impression on the two producers, but she
wasn't around when the music Ben and Brian were making started to
take shape. They tried a few other girls, but it was always "Til"
they had in mind. Just in time Matilda White arrived back from overseas,
and was added to the track that came the introduction to Origene,
'Suddenly Silent'.
On the strength
of 'Suddenly Silent' Oregene started work on an album, adding songs
written with Matilda to the music Ben Grayson and Brian Canham had
been cooking up on the way.
