Superheist
Melbourne
groove ridden metal band Superheist took eight years to release
their first album, April 2001's 'The Prize Recruit'. The beginnings
of the band go back to around 1980 when Superheist guitarist/producer/engineer
to-be D.W.Norton met singer Rod McLeod at Frankston High School.
D.W. had just arrived from Scotland. Rod was the first friend he
made. Feta Sabawa, another Frankston High student, came next. Norton
met Sean Pentecost at a Frankston music shop and the basic line-up
for Superheist was in place. The core of the band has remained the
same ever since, although Sean left for a while, forcing the band
to use other drummers, and at one point Felah went overseas before
returning to Australia and the band. Bassist Drew Dedman is the
'new boy'. He joined during 1999. Norton met Drew through his work
in recording studios.
After
signing to Shock Record`s in-house label Shagpile (joining the likes
of Frenzal Rhomb, Nancy Vandal, Bodyjar and Mach Pelican) the band
developed a biting live reputation through their performances at
The Vans Warped tour, the east coast leg with Fear Factory, and
touring nationally with the Sepultura. Name-checking the diverse
list of Deftones, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode and Rage Against The
Machine as key musical influences, Superheist have blended those
influences into an identifiable hybrid style.
On record they
established themselves with Jan 00's 'Eight Miles High' EP. It was
supposed to be an album, but Shock suffered an internal upheaval
during which some bands were dropped. Superheist stayed but the
release of their "album" was delayed. When Shock was ready again
the band looked at their record and decided some of the songs were
no longer representative. The stuff they were happy with comprised
the 'Eight Miles High' EP. Other songs ended up on B-Sides.
The long-awaited
first album 'The Prize Recruit' was honed down from nearly forty
songs, some written well before the sessions, some written moments
before the band went into the studio. After the initial sessions
in a "proper" recording studio the band took themselves, their music
and computers to the seaside, set up a vocal booth in the walk-in
wardrobe of the rented house and spent two weeks completing the
album which was then mixed in Sydney and mastered in America.
In December
2001 Superheist replaced singer Rod "Berger" McLeod with Joey Biro,
who sings with From The Inside.
