Marcel Borrack
- Help
From
start to finish this album is filled with absolute gems. The opening
title track is reminiscent of Elvis Costello, but the overall mood
of the record is more like the singers from Red House Painters (without
the guitar) and the Black Eyed Peas (without the cabaret), who perform
with a great sense of melody but detachment, as if they're tired
from being hurt. Marcel Borrack has recorded this album himself
at home, playing all the instruments. That lends more weight to
that detachment. We're the only ones he's sharing these emotions
with. Marcel comes to us after years of playing with bands, and
experience writing for movie soundtracks. He knows what he's doing,
knows how to express himself in song, and tug at our heartstrings.
There's a rich melancholy at work here, illustrated by 'Eight Items
Of Less', about trying to avoid eye contact with someone at the
supermarket. There's a bit of that sort of thing happening here.
All delivered in an uncluttered assured manner. (Croxton Records)
