The Audreys
- Between Us and Last Night
Something
like a cross between Neko Case and the Cowboy Junkies Adelaide-formed
but Melbourne-based group the Audreys cast an eclectic spell with
their first album, 'Between Last Night And Us'. Out front is the
cool, melodic and wistful voice of singer Taasha Coates. You can
imagine her at the microphone with her eyes closed, focused on drawing
out the emotions of the lyrics, sometimes in harmony. Is it country,
is it folk, is it blues? Around her works a sophisticated musical
palette. Piano. Strings. “Rock” band. Banjo. That's just one song.
'Come On In'. Sounds busy but everything has its place, everything
works towards the ultimate beauty of the “work”. 'Long Ride' is
a dramatic sidetrack with guitarist Cam Goodall leading the vocals.
'Nothing Wrong With Me', is dark and brooding. 'Banjo And Violin'
equally takes risks musically, shimmering with spaghetti western
tension. But it's in fact the presence of the banjo in the musical
mix - an instrument you don't hear much these days - which keeps
the album grounded on the whole in some timeless charming void.
