Holly Throsby
- Under the Town
For
her second album Sydney's Holly Throsby has returned to the country
cottage where she recorded her stark and intimate debut 'On Night'.
This time however she's closed the windows so that the sounds of
the birds and crickets didn't come in. And she's invited a few extra
friends in to add brooding strings for the first time, while Holly
herself for the first time sits behind the piano, as well as singing
and playing guitars to gentle bass and drum accompaniment. So she's
moving on, growing. What hasn't changed is the revealing, daring
nature of her songs, Holly musing on life and love in a quiet breathless
provocative voice, accentuating every word. She's sensual and fragile.
The songs are filled with images and feelings that spill between
the songs. Central here is 'The Shoulders And Bends' where one minute
she ponders over the rabbits caught in her car headlights, and then
tells her lover 'I'm trying to trust you, but I just don't know
where you've been." Her songs are poetry set to tasty sensitive
pop songs with melodies you remember, but it's always the words
and the voice she delivers them with that you come back to. Clearly
she's writing about what's on her mind, haunted by the past, possibly
afraid of the future, trying to deal with today, sharing her thoughts
with those who share her life, and with us. (Spunk)
