Book descriptions:The Allusions
In
this booklet, Garry Aurisch, who believes that the Allusions have been
overlooked by both collectors and writers of Australian pop, puts forward The
Allusions' case. Aurisch outlines
the band's origins, their recording and performing career and analyses their
music, song by song. Aurisch
also suggests that while The Allusions were excellent imitators of the Beatles'
sound, The Allusions might have recorded, on a single, the first feedback in
Australia and pioneered the heavy metal riff! A5
format, 26p, illustrated $5.50 --------------- The Australian
New Music Record Guide, Volume 1 1976-80
Written
by Ian McFarlane. This
was intended to be the first of a series of publications written and compiled by
well respected writer Ian McFarlane.
Volume Two and Three were to cover subsequent periods during the early
and mid 1980s, up to 1986. Since
writing this, McFarlane has gone on to publish his own books under his Pristine
imprint: Freedom Train and Prehistoric
Sounds. Much of the material
planned for Volumes 2 & 3 have been incorporated into these publications. In
this guide, McFarlane writes about each record, single and album released
by Australian artists. The format
Ian chose is to chronologically list the releases by year and he first lists all
the releases for each year and expands in depth more about the releases in the
general text. His aims for the book
were threefold: 1.
to attempt to list and examine all the releases during the stated period 2.
providing fans and collectors a guide to what is available in this field 3.
to encourage fans and collectors to seek out and listen to the records
themselves. McFarlane's
definition of New Music music is that which emerged either via the New Wave (ie
resulting from the 1976-77 punk upheaval spearheaded by The Sex Pistols, The
Ramones, The Clash, The Saints et al with pioneers such as the Velvet
Underground, the Stooges and the New York Dolls also being cited) or since the
late '70s/ early '80s and that continued to favour experimentation, adventure,
innovation and making music not just for the potential financial rewards. Published
in 1992; A 4 format, 56 pages, $6.50 Other publications by Ian McFarlane available via Moonlight -------------- Australian Rock
Instrumental Discography
Compiled
by Geoff Jermy This
major work was the first time that someone had attempted to document
instrumental recordings of Australian and New Zealand artists.
Jermy lists each release alphabetically by artist, indicating which songs
are instrumental, which songs have singing, providing full discographical
information such as label, catalogue numbers, dates of release and re-issues
where appropriate. He also writes comments about each entry, and also lists on
which compilations songs appear. The
first print run is almost sold out, and a new revised edition is planned in the
near future. Jermy lists recordings
from the late 1950's right up until 1995. Published
1995; A4, 208p illustrated, $33
------------------------------- Battle of the
Bands
Written
by Terence J Stacey, This
book is an introduction to the Battles of the Bands from 1964 and 1972.
Mostly promoted by the Hoadley's confectionary company, the competition
was designed to find the "best" band in the land.
Stacey, a minor participant of the affair, has researched into the
background of the competition, giving an overview as well as an insight into
back stage activities. The booklet
also comes with an insert that lists all the known winners from heats from all
around the country. A5 format, 20 pages $4.40 , illustrated -------------------- Caddie

it in
Townsville
Compiled
by Henry Griggs Griggs
had done most of the research for this book on an informal basis when Moonlight
finally offered to publish his book. More
thorough than other regional booklets, Griggs has also documented the history of
many of the well-known venues. Another
chapter of the book went missing after a car accident.
It has a similar format to that of the Who's Who
of Australian Rock. A5 format, 58 pages $6.5
Diggin' and
Rockin' in Bendigo
Compiled
by Chris Spencer After
researching extensively for information for the Who's
Who of Australian Rock, Spencer decided to look into his own
backyard. This book documents the
history of popular and rock music using a similar format to that of the Who's
Who. Unlike
the other books in the Regional series, this has an index where individual
musicians can be traced and cross-referenced. A5 format, Part1 1959-89, 52 pages $8 Illustrated.
--------------------- A Drummer's
Story
By
Denis Gilmore. Moonlight
stumbled across the manuscript to this book quite by accident.
Gilmore had begun to tell his family the story of his life as a family
history treatise and had produced a couple of copies for his own use before
being contacted by Moonlight Publishing. Dropping
the chapters about the background to the Gilmore family, this book takes a
detailed look into the world of a young pop band, The PleaZers that had some
success in New Zealand. Gilmore's
writing style is very conversational and the book is a laconic tale of the inner
happenings of a rock/pop band during the mid 1960s. A4
format, thermal bound, illustrated, 74 pages $16.5 Denis has also written a follow up: Play
it again Sam Continues
the stories of Drummer Dennis Gilmore.
---------------- The Fax on Max
(Merritt)
By
Paul McHenry After
the success of some of McHenry's previous books, McHenry decided to tackle the
career of Max Merritt, from the phenomenal success in the early sixties in New
Zealand, via Australia and the UK, until his present destination in the USA.
As with all of these books, it includes a detailed discography, and
includes summaries of all his album reviews. A 5 format, 36 pages, illustrated $5.50 -------------------- Floods, Sweat
and Beers
Compiled
by Aidan Kelly. The
Northern Territory and Darwin seem unlikely places to find rock and roll bands,
but Kelly has documented most of them in this book. It includes a few of the lesser known rural bands, as well as
a few from Alice Springs. It
continues the series of books about bands from regional centres around
Australia. Unfortunately, there has
only been one print run of this book, and both the author, who now resides in
Perth, and the publisher are keen for someone to continue the work. A5
format, 1st draft $2.50 -------------- By
Paul McHenry, Little
has been written about the whimsical songwriter Poulsen since his departure from
Australia in the mid '70s. McHenry
has delved into the vaults to discover where Poulsen has been over the past
decades. Includes a full
discography, summaries of major reviews and information about cover versions of
Poulsen's songs. A5 format, illustrated 24 pages, $6:50 --------------- An
Historical Anthology about Punk, Gothic & Industrial Music By
Michael Finnriorden Moonlight
initially asked Finnriorden to write an overview of Goth music in Australia.
What we ended up with was a personal account of Finnriorden's experiences
growing up among a variety of more unusual musical styles in inner Melbourne. A5 landscape format, 24 pages ill, $3 --------------------- The Rock Music Industry and the Creation of Australian Images 1958
and 1987. By
David Groenewegen Groenewegen
wrote this book as his thesis to complete his Master's degree at Melbourne
University. The books two main
directions are the study of the public images that local rock musicians and
singers have sought to an Australian audience, and how the local industry has
changed as a result of these efforts to make Australian rock music popular.
Groenewegen has looked at the local music industry and used examples of
some of our Australian pop icons to elaborate on his contentions.
Thus while concentrating mainly on the most popular artists of different
eras, the book becomes a history of Australian rock and pop. There is also an interview with Molly Meldrum and Rob Hirst
from Midnight Oil. A4
format, thermal bound 56 pages $13 ---------------------- Rockin'
and Shakin' in Rock City: Compiled
by Chris Spencer While
researching for the Who's Who of Australian
Rock, there seemed to the author an
unusual high number of bands that originated in Newcastle.
It probably had more to do with the city being one of the biggest centres
outside the capital cities, but nevertheless, Newcastle has had a thriving music
industry since the 1960s. The book
is currently in its third edition, but plans are underway for a local researcher
to take over its production. The
first in the series of booklets about regional centres. A4 format, 4th edition, 32 pages, $6.50 -------------- Rockin'

------------------ Restoring our Musical Heritage by Paul McHenry Paul has compiled a list of classic Australian albums that have been re-issued on cd.
