The continuing adventures
of You Am I
You Am I are on the move again, leaving EMI after two
albums, going out of their way to say: "Although we've had a strong,
affectionate, intelligent relationship with EMI for our past two LP's, the
making of this record has been such a unique, bewildering, exciting
experience that the band has decided to formalize a release with a hand
picked crew that we've spent more than a few early hours pontificating
about what we love about being in this band, and creating music. After
almost 20 years of making records, we found ourselves bursting at the seams
with energy, and the people at our new team understand our need to dive in
headfirst and get fruity." Tim Rogers. The band’s self-titled ninth
studio album will be released through fast rising indie label Sydney indie
Other Tongues and distributed by MGM. No-one who has watched You Am I’s
career will be surprised. Taking control of their recording is the next
logical step, with the band itself having assumed responsibility for almost
everything else, shedding management, and putting production of their music
in the hands of Greg Wales, who mixes the band’s live performances after
being an occasional on stage member. You Am I started their career with
Inxs’ manager Chris Murphy’s RooArt label, finding their records bounced
between distributors according to
the needs of their label, finally landing with BMG who had no commitment to
the band. EMI/Virgin followed. It seemed finally like the label deal You Am
I’s music and standing in Australian music deserved, but EMI have had
internal problems in the meantime. Time to take control, which You Am I
have now done. The ‘You Am I’ album is due in October. (Aug 22)

Birds spread their wings
With their eyes on an
international breakthrough Birds of Tokyo has signed a new management deal.
The Perth band has signed to John Watson Management, the management behind
such artists as Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Cold Chisel and Pete Murray.
“This management transition is entirely amicable and will take place
gradually over the coming months with a view to helping the band make
inroads internationally,” a band statement said. The band’s previous
manager, Ross Macpherson, will continue to act as the band’s concert
promoter on their Australian tour this September. In making the change
Birds Of Tokyo are voicing their gratitude for the job Macpherson has done
on their behalf to date while recognizing the possibilities ahead. From day
one Birds Of Tokyo has taken the band members on an unplanned trajectory. Guitarist Adam Spark
originally enlisted Karnivool singer Ian Kenny in 2004 to sing on songs he
planned purely as a songwriting exercise. The songs turned out better than
expected, and Anthony Jackson (bass), and Adam Weston (drums) for another
popular Perth band Tragic Delicate were added and the songs became the
vehicle band, Birds Of Tokyo, to operate alongside everyone’s other
activities. Birds Of Tokyo has captured music fans’ attention and their
third album, self-titled, recently entered the national charts at No.2.
Clearly its a project that deserves their attention. (August 14)
Watch
me re-appear
Glenn Richards is making Augie
March’s “indefinite hiatus” announcement last year definite with the
revelation of an album in the works with another set of musicians. The
album was recorded in a huge warehouse where 19 songs were rehearsed and
recorded in a month Mike Noga (The Drones, The Gentlemen of Fortune), Dan Luscome (The Drones, Paul Kelly),
Glenn’s brother Chris and Ned Collette bass player Ben Bourke. Richards,
the voice and creative force behind Augie March, has given several “solo”
performances over the years and
rekeased two non-Augie EPs
one under his own name and another as G.A. Richards and the Dark
Satanic Mills Bros. Augie March’s fourth (and last?) album was called
‘Watch Me Disappear’. A coincidence, or a prediction? (August 11)

Regurgitator

Regurgitator, “the band in the
bubble” are set for another innovative adventure next week. On August 8, as
part of the Graphic animation conference at the Sydney Opera House, the
benchmark anime film ‘Akari’ will be shown in the original Japanese
language version with English subtitles and rescored live by Regurgitator.

book, before being adapted into an animated film in 1988. Regurgitator
themselves - back in their classic 3 piece mode, with Seja embarking on her
own solo career - will release their first new material in more than three

city of Melbourne. The new material will be the band’s first since their
2007 release ‘Love and Paranoia’. “The tracks are currently being mixed by
Casey Rice after some additional recording at Head Gap and will be released
through digital outlets and physical forms in September,” a statement from
the band said. The band will head out in support of the as yet titled new
album this September. (Aug 1)

Stone Alone
Angus Stone released a solo album
before the recent second Angus and Julia Stone release ‘Down The Way’. Now
it’s Julia’s turn. She’s just wrapped up recording her still-untitled solo
effort although working titles include ‘Winter
on the Weekend’ and ‘The
Memory Machine’, both of which are songs
on the album.. Inevitably
there’s an overlap between the brother and sister’s work alone and
together. The opening song from ‘Down The Way’ ‘Hold On’ is one of two
tracks originally intended for Julia’s album. The single from ‘Down The
Way’, ‘Big Jet Plane’ appears
without Julia’s voice on Angus’ ‘Lady Of The Sunshine’ project. Julia Stone
wrote and recorded the ten songs featured on her album late last year while
living in New York. Another solo Julia track ‘This Love’ recently featured on
the soundtrack for the film The Waiting City, starring Joel Edgerton
and Rhada Mitchell. No release date for Julia Stone’s has been scheduled.
Meanwhile Angus and Julia are booked together
to play shows in the UK and Europe until December. (July 30)
